Summary advice straw Turkey
In accordance with veterinary legislation, as provided by Commission Regulation (EC) No. 136/2004, it is prohibited to import straw from Turkey. However, 157 containers containing a total of 1,474 tonnes of straw from Turkey recently entered the EU, and were transported to the Netherlands via Belgium. 98 of these containers, containing a total of 856 tonnes of the straw, partly mixed with other straw and cuttings were then delivered to Dutch livestock farms. Part of this straw was intended for use as bedding in cages for pets such as guinea pigs. On 15 November 2011 the remaining 59 containers, in which several salt bales were also found, were impounded until further notice on Dutch territory by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority.
