MRSA

MRSA stands for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The common Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium which commonly occurs in the nose and on the skin of both humans and animals, usually without causing any problems. Just like the common Staphylococcus, MRSA can sometimes cause boils or eczema.

The methicillin resistance means that the penicillin group of antibiotics is no longer effective against this specific type of Staphylococcus bacterium. Hospitals in the Netherlands therefore try to exclude the MRSA bacterium to prevent people with lowered resistance, say after an operation, getting difficult-to-treat infections.
