GLP compliance monitoring is a national responsibility, but is internationally oriented. OECD Member countries are obliged to accept data generated in the testing of chemicals for the purposes of assessment, if these data are produced in accordance with GLP, and if national procedures for compliance monitoring have been established. Study audits, however, may be requested, if a receiving authority has serious doubts about the GLP status of a specific study.

The OECD has set up a “Working Group on GLP” for the exchange of information, harmonisation of procedures and unequivocal interpretation of the GLP Principles. Its members are the heads of the monitoring authorities of the OECD Member countries.
Apart from its regular meetings, during which the above issues are dealt with, this Group also organises consensus workshops with participants from both industry and governmental agencies. The OECD publishes the results of the Working Group’s activities and the workshops as guides, advisory documents and consensus documents on .
Furthermore training courses for GLP inspectors are organised to promote harmonised compliance monitoring internationally. At last much attention is paid to assisting less developed countries to set up GLP monitoring programmes.
