CHEK working group
The CHEK (Chemical Quality Assurance) working group of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Autority (VWA) deals with quality assurance of (laboratory) research. In doing so CHEK works as a fully independent branch of VWA. CHEK is responsible for the organisation, distribution and reporting of Proficiency Studies and for the production of Microbiological Reference materials.
Proficiency Studies (PS)
Large-scale quality assurance takes place by means of so-called proficiency studies or laboratory-evaluation research. In a proficiency study the research results of several national and international laboratories are compared, so individual laboratories can find out how they score. This is an important and objective way of measuring the analytical proficiency of laboratories and it gives an indication of the extent to which their result compares with that of others.
Microbiological Reference materials (RM)
Reference materials are a vital part of any quality assurance system of chemical and microbiological laboratories. These materials are used to check the quality of microbiological analyses. The results of these analyses are plotted on a control card, so analysts can see if quality is adequately assured during the analysis. CHEK developed and offers 14 different kinds of microbiological reference materials in milk or a medium.
